Several artists and groups I like
This page lists of a few artists I like; some are also mentioned on
my main music and lyrics page.
- Adiemus
is one of the CDs from composer and conductor Karl Jenkins.
I have Cantata Mundi (1996), and I like it very much: it is very
special, using the female voice of Miriam Stockley [see below for her!]
as instrument (giving sounds, no words). This CD is the follow-up of
Sanctuary (1995), which I do not have.
- All About Eve
The first two, All about Eve (1987) and Scarlet and other
stories (1989), are there best CDs I think; I also have
Touched by Jesus (1991), but I'm not so fond of that one.
Lyrics of four songs:
Flowers in our hair /
Martha's harbour /
She moved through the fair /
Never promise (anyone forever)
- Tori Amos
Tori's first CD, Little earthquakes (1992) is very good;
later CDs are less good, I think.
- Matraca Berg
A woman with a pleasant voice, singing country-like songs on the CD I
have: The speed of grace (1993).
- Heidi Berry
I prefer her first two albums: Love (1991) and
Heidi Berry (1993).
- Sarah Brightman

- Vicki Brown ===>
See the page I have about her.
- Jean-Patrick Capdevielle
Atylantos (2001), a magnificent concept album about the
legend of Atlantis with good music and singing.
Note: There was an official website on the Atylantos project, but
it has disappeared.
- Capercaillie
I have: The blood is strong (1995) and
To the moon (1996); the latter one disappointed me a bit.
- Charlotte Church
The magnificent Voice of an Angel (1998), a title which is right:
Charlotte has a very good voice, and it will no doubt develop further
when she grows older.
In 1999 a new CD was released, simply called Charlotte Church,
which is also a great album. And in November 2000 Charlotte released
a very nice Christmas album entitled Dream a Dream
===> See the page I have about Charlotte.
It is interesting to note that some songs Charlotte sings are also sung
by our Angel of Music, Sarah Brightman, but
there is a clear difference in style, though both sing with a great
passion and intensity.
- Suzanne Ciani
I have: The private music of (1992)
- Clanned
I have: Crann Úll (1980), Magical Ring (1983),
Macalla (1985), Banba (1993) and Lore (1998),
as well as several songs on cassette.
- Leonard Cohen
- Enya
I have: Enya (1987; also known as 'The Celts'),
Shepherd Moon (1988,1991) and The memory of trees (1995).
This last one is 'more of the same' as Enya's first CDs and therefore
a bit disappointing. [I have Watermark (198?) on cassette.]
- Laura Fygi
She sings well known and less well knows songs in a (often slow) jazzy
arrangement, with a very pleasant, low voice. I have the following CDs:
Introducing Laura Fygi (1991; her first), Bewitched
(1992), The lady wants to know (1994) and Turn out the
lamplight (1995). I prefer the first two CDs.

lists of the CDs I have.
Laura has not stopped making CDs!
I just have not come around checking for more CDs -- sorry.
For more info, check these links:
- Golden Carillo, i.e. Annie Golden and Frank Carillo
The three CD's I have are: A fire in new town (1992),
Toxic emotion (1994) and Back for more (1997).
Personally I prefer to hear them live, with only their voices and
Frank's guitar (on the CD's too many instruments are used, I think).
SilenZ Records released the first two albums; they do not seem to have
a web site.
There used to be two or three web pages about regarding Golden Carillo,
but they have disappeared. The record company of Back for more,
KAYOS productions
still has a web site, but that does not mention Golden Carillo.
Personal websites:
Frank Carillo and the
Bandoleros; no web site found from/about Annie Golden.
When people stop playing music they seem to slowly vanish from the
Internet ....
- Raymond van het Groenewoud
This is a Belgian singer with original and very good songs, almost all
in Dutch. I have Het beste van (1990; "The best of").
- Moira Kerr
sings with a good voice songs about Scotland, traditional and new (some
of which are written by herself); some of her music has been used in BBC
tv productions. I have: Glencoe, the glen of weeping (1991) and
All the best! (1996).
- Loreena McKennitt
===> See the page I have about her.
- Pink Floyd
Not all records, though. The best are:
Dark side of the moon, Wish you were here and
The wall -- though not all songs on these albums are nice.
The more recent CD The division bell (1994) is quite good too.
- Sally Oldfield
- Maggie Reilly
Maggie has a very pleasant voice and sings good songs.
I have: Echoes (1992) and Midnight sun (1993).
- Happy Rhodes
Happy has a more than excellent, strong voice (ranging from rather low to
very high) and I love listening to it. I have her CD
RhodeSongs (1993). You can find a
track
list on the Ecto home page.
Lyrics of one song:

- Secret Garden
All songs are composed by the Norwegian musician Rolf Lovland, who
plays piano and keyboards, and feature the Irish violinist Fionnualla
Sherry and the combination works wonderfully: they make music which
wonderful music to listen to!
I have these three CDs: Songs from a secret garden (1995),
White stones (1997) and Dawn of a new century (1999);
I prefer the first one, but the third is very good too.
Rolf Lovland describes the background of his music in the booklet of
the first CD like this:
-
Somewhere within us all there is a secret garden. A garden in which
we can seek refuge when times are rough or retire to in joy or
contemplation. For years I have visited my own secred garden in
search of organic harmony and melody. The songs on this CD are some
of what I've found.
-
A year ago I met an artist who, through the soulfull simplicity of
her instrument, gave my songs a voice. She is the famed Irish
violinist Fionnualla Sherry. Together we have tended the secret
garden - and the crop is here for your picking.
-
It is my sincere wish that, by uncovering some of my secrets, you
will pay a visit to your own garden.

- Emma Shapplin
A woman with a very clear and good voice, which sings mysterious
(French) songs on the CD Carmine Meo from (1997; re-released in
1999 with 3 bonus songs).
===> official web site
[the lay-out is quite bad, and links are not always where the text
suggests they should be!]
- Miriam Stockley
Another female singer with a wonderful voice that can handle a great range
of styles. Miriam worked with many, many famous artists and her voice
can be heard on the CDs from the Adiemus project from Karl
Jenkins. Miriam's first own CD is simply called Miriam (1999)
and it is great! For lyrics and background info, see Miriam's
official web site:
http://www.miriam.co.uk/
- Vaya Con Dios
A Belgian group, with the excellent voice of Dany Klein. The CDs I have
are all four made: Vaya Con Dios (1986), Night Owls (1990),
Time Flies (1992) and Roots and Wings (1995); after this
"Vaya Con Dios" stopped as a group.
- Juliane Werding
A German woman who sings really nice German songs. The CDs I have are:
Sehnsucht ist unheilbar (1986), Zeit für engel (1990),
Zeit nach Avalon zu geh'n (1991) and Sie weiß was sie
will (1992). [Here's a nice photo of
Juliane; 110 kb.]
Lyrics of three songs:
Stimmen im wind /
Alle macht /
Schöne Frau'n
