Sarah Brightman & José Cura -- There for me

Sarah:
There for me, every time I've been away
Will you be there for me, thinking of me ev'ry day
Are you my destiny, words I never dared to say
Will you be there for me?

Just think of you and me, we could never toe the line
It's such a mystery just to hear you say you're mine
And while you're close to me, so close to me
Just hold me

José:
Se non sei con me, mi sembra grigia la città
Camminando solo i piccoli vedo giocar
Volti e voci del passato che non ricordavo più
Mi chiedono

Both:
Are you still there for me?
Forse qualche giorno poi
Il mondo capirá che non molto [può] capitar
E tu ci sei per me senti cosa dicono
But you're just there for me

Sarah:
And while you're close to me, so close to me
Just hold me

José:
Dimmi quanto tempo ancora resterai con me
Dimmi quante cose mi nascondi dentro te
Molti sogni abbiamo che alfin potremmo vivere
Io spero che

Both:
You are still there for me?
Forse qualche giorno poi
Il mondo capirá che non molto [può] capitar
E tu ci sei per me senti cosa dicono
But you're just there for me

Sarah:
There for me

José:
There for me

Sarah:
There for me

Music and lyrics: Angelo La Bionda, Carmelo La Bionda, Charly Ricanek / Richard Palmer-Jones

From: Timeless (1997).

Source of the lyrics: thanks to Carlos Edmar de Almeida Souza and Alessandra Cavalletti.
Note: the words between square brackets are not sung, but they have to be there for the sentences to make sense, so I'm told.

People have sent me emails asking for the sheet music of this song and I have to disappoint everyone: I have no sheet music, nor do I know where to get it -- sorry.

Carlos send me the following translation, made by a friend of his (see above for who sings what):

Sarah:
There for me, every time I've been away
Will you be there for me, thinking of my ev'ry day
Are you my destiny, words I never dared to say
Will you be there for me?

Just think of you and me, we could never toe the line
It's such a mystery just to hear you say you're mine
And while you're close to me, so close to me
Just hold me

José:
If you're not with me, the city looks gray
When I walk alone, I see children playing
Faces and voices from the past that I did not recall
They ask me

Both:
Are you still there for me?
Maybe any day then
The world will see that too little can happen
And you'll be there for me, listen what they say
But you're just there for me

Sarah:
And while you're close to me, so close to me
Just hold me

José:
Tell me how long you will be with me
Tell me the things you hide inside of you
We have so many dreams that we can live in the end
I hope that

Both:
You are still there for me
Maybe any day then
The world will see that little can happen
And you'll be there for me, listen what they say
But you're just there for me

Sarah:
There for me

José:
There for me

Sarah:
There for me

Origin of the song & other versions

Franck Bisson wrote that the original song "There for me" was written and sung by La Bionda in 1978, an Italian disco production project founded in 1978 in Milano by the La Bionda brothers, Carmelo and Michelangelo. That song had all-English lyrics. In 1981 the song was given French lyrics by the famous French singer Dalida and called "Fini la comédie" (lyrics).

After that, Sarah and José sing the song with some Italian lyrics, featuring on this page.

And in 2002 there was a French adaptation entitled "Je serai là pour toi" (from Quebec, Canada) by Gini Quilico, a famous opera singer and Marilou, a 12 year old girl.

Gary Morrison wrote me about this version that the lyrics "have been changed to reflect the questions of a young girl asking an adult if he will be there to help her through his life. The adult shows his concerns that she will one day leave on her own, but when she replies that she doesn't understand, he tells her that he will always be there for her. It's a wonderful and touching adaptation." Lyrics of this adaptation can be found at this page and at other webpages.

By the way, there also is a French version of the same title by Françoise Hardy. This is a 2002 French adaptation, originally written in 1951 and it is a completely different song.

Another French song with the same title can be found here.

And in 2003 Sandra & Tony Alessi recorded an adapted version of There for me.
