In june 1988 I started with a research for my Ph.D. thesis,
and on 27 january 1993
I succesfully publically defended my thesis, entitled:
Magnetic Energy Balance
and Period Stability
of the Solar Dynamo
Promotor: Prof. dr. C. Zwaan,
Astronomical Institute
of the University of Utrecht.
Co-promotor: Dr. P. Hoyng,
SRON
Laboratory for Space Research, Utrecht.
On these pages I would like to give you an idea of what this thesis deals
with, and what the scientific interest of it is. Since it is hardly useful
to present you the details of the mathematics or the computations (for who
would be interested in that?!), I chose the following topics:
- The first chapter is an introduction to
Solar Magnetic Activity,
and under this
I present you a part of that chapter, with the figures.
- Het proefschrift bevat ook een uitgebreide samenvatting
in het Nederlands:
Magnetische Activiteit van de Zon;
- In order to put some personal notes in my thesis, I gave
between the chapters a few citations of songs. Seven of
these are in English
and one is in Dutch.
- I started and ended the thesis with citations of books by
Terry Pratchett, which I gave both
in English
and in Dutch.
Here is a list of my publications
concerning this Ph.D. Thesis research.
