Sarah Brightman

[CD-cover] Harem

Sarah's CD Harem is scheduled for release around in May 2003, depending on the version -- again the record companies saw it fit to release several versions, differing only in one song. The once excellent but no longer existing website of Christian Colding had more information on the different versions. Here I merely list the songs and give the lyrics as far as I have them, and I give some personal comments.

After the release of Harem, Sarah embarked on a World Tour in 2004 (with a live DVD and CD),
and a DVD special called Harem: a desert fantasy was released.
At the concerts a special Harem Tour CD is on sale.

Additional tracks on the various versions:

*) Note that "Saraband" or "Sarabande" (i.e. without an 'h'!) is (a piece of music for) a court dance of the 17th-18th centuries. It is an old Spanish slow and solemn dance in a three-partite measure, and the accompanying musi.

**) There is also a song called Where eagles fly, which is quite difference; it has not been released officially.

There was also a Limited Edition release, and I am told (I do not have it myself) that it has the International version of Harem plus a bonus DVD. This Limited Edition will be release not only in the USA but also in Canada and many European countries. The DVD contains:

Comments

As stories spread on what kind of CD Harem would be, I feared that I would not like the CD very much: there as talk of more pop-like songs, with a dance beat, and I feared that this would drown Sarah's wonderful voice when she is singing, and at the same time result in some 13-in-a-dozen songs on top-40-lists, making the album not very special.

Now that I have heard the songs I unfortunately have to say that my fears have come true: the songs have far too much dance beat to my liking, and therefore I will not play the CD very often. Still, there are a few songs on Harem I like: "Stranger in paradise", "Free" and "The war is over", which calm, melodious songs without too much disco/dance beat.

I won't say that any artist could have made this album, as Sarah's voice remains special. But Sarah's choice of music is clearly turning into a direction that is not at all my favourite; by far my favourites remain the albums The Songs That Got Away and Surrender, The Unexpected Songs.

Perhaps Harem will turn out to be the point marking the end of my fan-ship for Sarah Brightman.
