Sarah Brightman - Solo con te

Gioia nel cuor troverò
Con te il ciel raggiungerò
Pace ci sarà

Gioia nel cuor troverò
Con te il ciel raggiungerò
Pace ci sarà

Gioia nel cuor troverò
Con te il ciel raggiungerò
Un mondo nuovo con te vedrò

music: Georg F. Händel (1685-1759), adapted by Frank Peterson / Sarah Brightman
lyrics: Chiara Ferraù

From: La Luna (2000)
and from: La Luna: non-European version (2000) and from: Amalfi: Sarah Brightman love songs (2010).

Source of the lyrics: the CD-booklet, with a correction or two of printing errors.
For some remarks on Händel's original piece and the lyrics of it, see further down.

The booklet of both La Luna CDs also give a translation, which differs slightly.
=   The European version has as title "Just with you", whereas the non-European version has "Only with you"; I prefer the first one, so I use that here.
=   The first line of each stanza ends with "... in the heart" in the European version and with "... in my heart" in the non-European version; the latter seems to me the best here,

Just with you

I will find joy in my heart
With you I will reach heaven
There will be peace

I will find joy in my heart
With you I will reach heaven
There will be peace

I will find joy in my heart
With you I will reach heaven
With you I will see a new world

On Händel's original:   "Dank Sei Dir, Herr"

The original Händel piece on which Solo con te is based was German and is entitled "Dank Sei Dir, Herr" (="Thanks to you, Lord", literally). Judging from the lyrics I thought at first it might be part of one of Händel's Oratoria, but this does not seem to be so. The following remarks were attached to the sheet with the original lyrics:
"This great religious song came to light early in this [=20th?] century, and although its exact source is still unknown, the style and manner of the music leave little doubt that Händel, indeed, composed it."

"Noted singers of the past such as John McCormack and Kirsten Flagstad frequently featured it. As in Lascia ch'io pianga, we find here trains that characterize all that Händel wrote: greatness achieved with a minimum of melodic and harmonic complexity."

(Note that Sarah sings an adapted version of Händel's Lascia ch'io pianga on her Eden album.)

It is unknown who wrote the original German lyrics; Chiara Ferraù, credited above, is probably the one who wrote the Italian lines of Solo con te.
Here are the original German lines as well as a translation in English that really catches the solemnness of the song.

Dank sei Dir, Herr Thanks be to Thee, O Lord
Dank sei Dir,
Dank sei Dir, Herr,
Du hast dein Volk
Mit dir geführt,
Dein ist nun das Land.

Eh diese Feinde uns auch bedroh'n,
Deine Hand schützte uns;
In deiner Gnade gabst du uns Heil.

Dank sei Dir,
Dank sei Dir, Herr,
Du hast dein Volk,
Mit dir geführt,
Dein ist nun das Land.

Dank sei Dir,
Dank sei Dir, Herr,
Du hast dein Volk,
Mit dir geführt,
In deiner Gnade gabst du uns Heil.

Thanks be to Thee,
Thanks be to Thee, O Lord,
Thou hast led Thy people
With Thee,
Thine is now the land.

Even before these enemies manaced us,
Thy hand protected us;
In Thy grace Thou gavest us salvation.

Thanks be to Thee,
Thanks be to Thee, O Lord,
Thou hast led Thy people
With Thee,
Thine is now the land.

Thanks be to Thee,
Thanks be to Thee, O Lord,
Thou hast led Thy people
With Thee,
In Thy grace Thou gavest us salvation.
