Sarah Brightman - She doesn't see him

When she passes him by
She's a ray of light
Like the first drop of sun
From the sky
And he knows she's a queen
Who deserves a king
But he is not a king
And she doesn't see him

When she dances
She moves him to a smile
He sees everything
Near her shine
There's a grace in her ways
That he can't contain
He has not that grace
Oh, he has not that grace

And the closer he gets
He can't help but hide
So ashamed
Of his body and voice
There are boundaries
We pass in spite of the war
But our own
We can't seem to cross

He has a way that surrounds him
So delicate
With a glory that reigns in his life
He is also so much that he is not
These things they don't see
And she doesn't see him
Oh-oh-oh ...
And she doesn't see him

There are things we can change
If we just choose to fight
But the walls of injustice are high

When she passes him by
She's a ray of light
Like the first drop of sun
From the sky
And he knows she's a queen
Who deserves a king
Someone other than him
So different from him

Oh-oh-oh ...
She doesn't see him
Oh-oh-oh ...
She doesn't see him
She doesn't see him

music & lyrics: Goldman / Romanelli
English lyrics: Read / Ingebrigsten / Marazzi / Adams

From: La Luna (2000)

Source of the lyrics: the CD-booklet, with a correction or two for printing errors and indication of the repetitions.

On the non-European version of La Luna, Sarah sings a song called He doesn't see me, which is an adapted version of this 'original', the difference being that in that adapted version it is a woman who sings about a man that does not see her, whereas in the 'original' it is someone singing the story of a woman who does not see a man.

Background of the song

Someone using the alias "lony74" as email-name wrote me that this song was in the soundtrack of the film Astérix et Obélix contre César (France, 1999), which was written by Jean-Jacques Goldman and Roland Romanelli. For info on that movie, see the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Emma Rubin added that the song was sung on the soundtrack by a band called a1 (= Mark Read, Chris Ingebristen, Paul Marazzi, Benjamin Stevens-Adams).

Diane added that according to the UK pop group A1 they took the French song, reworked some of the wording and melody, and then came out with "She Doesn't See Me". Apparently Sarah Brightman liked their version so much that she put it on her album.

"lony74" also sent me the original French lyrics (left column) and I had a go at making a translation, with some help of AltaVista's BabelFish translator (which strangely enough translates both "elle" (she) and "il" (he) as "it"). Note that the original is She does not se me, instead of She does not see him (as above, on the European CD) or He does not se me (as Sarah sings on the non-European version of the CD). In the original French version it is therefor as if a man sings to/about a woman. I do not know the movie, but knowing the characters I'd guess the song is about Obelix (played by Gérard Depardieu) and the village beauty Falbala (played by the model Laetitia Casta).

Si l'on veut, si l'on combat

She does not see me

When she passes, she outshines like a glare
Against a sky it is her whom one sees
She is like a queen who deserves only a king
I am not a king
She does not see me

When she dances any dance, her [waist], her arms
Close to her everything lights a little, why
She has this grace that others do not have
All that I do not have
She does not see me

And the closer I come, the more I feel clumsy
The more I hate my body and my voice
There are borders which one passes
In spite of thousands of soldiers
But ours are not crossed

He has [style] and delicate gestures
[Light life] of that world
He is also so much that he is not
But the women do not know
The things they see
She does not see me

One can change things so much
If it is wanted, if one fights
But not those injustices

When she passes, she outshines like a glare
Against a sky it is her whom one sees
She is like a queen who deserves only a king
Another than me
I am not a king
She does not see me
She does not see me
