Citations of songs / Citaten uit liedjes

This page contains some citations of songs I liked and typed to serve as intermezzos in my Ph.D. thesis, which dealt with some aspects of the magnetic field of the Sun; some more citations are on another page.

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death

Pink Floyd - Time
(Dark side of the Moon; 1973)

And if there's only one reason
To live in this world,
I'll find it...
And if there's only one reason
To give of yourself,
Ask the lonely and the dying.

All about Eve - Only one reason
(Scarlet and other stories; 1989)

And if you should go skating
On the thin ice of modern life,
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
Of a million tear-stained eyes,
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet.
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind,
With your fear flowing out behind you,
As you claw the thin ice.

Pink Floyd - The thin ice
(The wall; 1979)

Solitude stands by the window
She turns her head as I walk in the room
I can see by her eyes she's been waiting
Standing in the slant of the late afternoon

(...)

Solitude stands in the doorway
And I'm struck once again by her black silhouette
By her long cool stare and her silence
I suddenly remember each time we've met

(...)

I turn to the crowd as they're waiting
They're sitting all together in the dark in the warm
I wanted to be in there among them
I see how their eyes are gathered into one

Suzanne Vega - Solitude standing
(Solitude standing; 1987)

Some men never listen,
Others never learn,
But why this man did as he did
Only he will ever know.

He knew he was walking
Into a waiting trap,
Neatly set up for him
With a bait so richly wrapped.

So he went inside there to take on what he found,
But he never escaped them, for who can escape what he desires?

Genesis - The lady lies
(...And then there were three...; 1978)

We satisfy our endless needs
And justify our bloody deeds
In the name of destiny
And in the name of God

The Eagles - The last resort
(Hotel California; 1976)

I've been watching the news
And it doesn't feel safe
It seems so far removed from this slumbering place
Cat at the hearth ... dog at the door
Restless as sparrows awaiting the dawn
Don't go out tonight
Don't leave me alone
It doesn't feel save in our English home
There's fear in my heart
In my ear a whisper
Are you afraid too, or is it just me?

(...)

Shut up your ears to the madness outside
We'll study old photographs
And listen to tunes
It's too cold and dark
Stay here by the fire
It doesn't feel safe

All about Eve - Never promise (anyone forever)
(All about Eve; 1988)

Citations from books by Terry Pratchett

The sun rose slowly,
as if it wasn't sure
it was worth all the effort.

Another Disc day dawned,
(...) which meant
that the soft yellow light of dawn
flowed over the sleeping landscape
like the caress of a gentle lover
or, as some would have it,
like golden syrup.

from: The light fantastic

The sun crept over the horizon,
decided to make a run for it,
and began to rise.

of, zoals sommige mensen zeggen,
als frietsaus.

uit: Dat wonderbare licht

De zon kroop naar de horizon,
besloot er eens vaart achter te zetten,
en begon op te komen.

uit: Dunne Hein
